Vestibule House
Project type
Residential
Date
2021
Location
East Coast
Role
Architecture [FA] + ID [OP]
Vestibule house was designed based on the client’s experience from living in the middle east. We referenced typical “Riad” or vestibule typology prevalent in Moroccan and traditional arab houses. These vestibules were designed to be pauses or breaks within the house to allow the user to mentally shift from the external world into the comfort of one’s home.
The first vestibule is placed right at the front of the house, where double volume fluted “rammed earth” columns mark the initial pause. The enlarged main door is hidden from street view to allow privacy. Private spaces are placed on the upper floors – of which the Master bedroom sits adjacent to another vestibule. At the topmost floor, we have the last of the four vestibules that allows users of the master study to retreat and take a break in.
Materials were carefully curated to reflect the warmth and earthy tones prevalent in housing of that region.
